Ga. Tech’s Ivan Allen Prize goes to Zimbabwe’s Mtetwa

The Atlanta Business Chronicle

The 2014 Ivan Allen Jr. Prize for Social Courage will be awarded to Beatrice Mtetwa, a human rights attorney from Zimbabwe.

Mtetwa is the first woman and the first non-Georgian to receive the Ivan Allen Jr. Prize, reports’ s Maria Saporta. She has fought injustice and defended press freedom for more than 20 years, Saporta adds.

The prize, which comes with a $100,000 cash award, will be awarded Nov. 13. It is funded through a gift from the Wilbur and Hilda Glenn Family Foundation, which endowed the prize in perpetuity, Saporta adds.

Nominations for the award come from the public. A nominating committee makes a recommendation to Georgia Tech President Bud Peterson, who makes the official selection.
